But first...

 

After 22 years of chain smoking, I was absolutely terrified of quitting smoking. The thought of quitting made me feel physically sick.

 

You see, deep down I wanted to break from my addiction. I wanted to...

 

...Stop My Addiction To Smoking Once...

 

...and for all. But I was terrified that I couldn’t live without my cigarettes. That I'd feel absolutely miserable. A physical wreck.

 

After all, without cigarettes, how on earth would I cope with everyday life?

 

My cigarettes had been my ‘friend’ all these years. The reliable friend I could rely on whenever I needed help. My constant companion who’d helped me through the bad (and the good) times.

 

Feeling stressed?…then I'd have a cigarette.

 

Need to relax?...It was only natural to light up a cigarette.

 

Coffee time?…How could anyone enjoy coffee without a cigarette.

 

Having a beer? Well…it was only natural to smoke at the same time.

 

Just every day life…Take a long drag of cigarette smoke, inhale it (savor it)…and…boy, my world was perfect.

 

Besides the thought of quitting smoking…how would I cope?

 

I couldn’t possible cope with life without my best ‘friend’ Mr Reliable, who helped me through the good times and the bad. My life would turn into a living hell. I wouldn’t be able to think straight. My world, as I knew it, would come crashing down. My nerves wouldn’t cope. I’d get wound up tighter than an elastic band. Smoking was my savor. My life, wouldn't be worth living.

 

That’s why I always dismissed quitting smoking to the back of my mind. Besides I was always too busy. There was always something on. Either work wise or socially. And I needed 'my friend' to keep me sane. So any thought of quitting was always being postponed.

 

Sure I knew my long term health would improve - once I’d quit smoking that is. But I enjoyed smoking. There was plenty of time for me to quit…before…there was any chance of me being struck by any serious smoking illness. Remember, I (thought) I was still in control.

 

Strokes, heart disease, emphysema they were for other smokers. Not me. They were the killers for those smokers who could never ever quit. That wasn’t me. I could quit whenever I chose to.

 

Anyway, it was too late for me to quit. I was a heavy smoker. Always had been. And always would be. The smoking habit was too deeply ingrained in my psyche. I was going to be a smoker ‘til the day I died. (Or so I thought).

 

Besides if by any chance I did manage to quit smoking…just one drag…just one lapse and I knew I’d be back at square one. The temptation would be too great. And I’d be going through 3 packs a day again. So quitting was a complete waste of time as far as I was concerned.

 

Of course, I was always being nagged non-stop to give up the habit.

 

Light a cigarette in front of family or friends …(and instantly it) provoke a barrage of, “When are you going to quit that filthy habit?”

 

Or...

Sad b*****ds. Why didn’t they just leave me in peace. Nag. Nag. Nag. Keep their noses out of my life. Stop interfering. It was my life. I enjoyed my smoking. And to hell with everybody else.

 

Perhaps you’ve thought the same way?

 

I dunno about you, but me being a chain smoker, my typical day went something like this:

 

I'd wake up and immediately light a cigarette. Then I'd watch some television in bed and smoke at least 2 to 3 cigarettes before getting into the shower. I’d smoke another cigarette before shaving and teeth brushing. And one afterwards.

 

Then smoke another while dressing. Breakfast would be another 2 cigarettes. And this was all before 7am!!

 

During the day I’d never be without a cigarette. In fact often I’d have two cigarettes lit! I’d smoke during meetings…in front of my computer…walking around… I’d…

 

…Even Smoke in No-Smoking Areas!

 

Like I said, I was smoking 3 packets of cigarettes every day. I’d tell friends I wasn’t addicted to cigarettes. And that I was in full control of my smoking habit. And of course I could give up any time I wanted.

 

But of course it was all a bunch of lies!

I was just lying to myself. Pretending I was in control of my smoking when in fact the cigarettes controlled ME.

 

For example take family reunions. I’d hate them. Why? Because I wasn’t allowed to smoke at the table. You see we Belgiums enjoy extensive dinner parties lasting 5-6 hours. All the time I was sat at the table I’d be thinking when (and how often) I could escape the dinner table for my next cigarette.

 

The same goes for any business meetings. If I didn’t have a cigarette…my concentration would drop. When I was talking to clients in a non-smoking office I would have to go outside every 5-10 minutes for a cigarette and then have to come back inside and explain my absence.

 

Try telling a business owner that you’ve only just met you’ve gotta’ keep nipping outside for a cigarette. Sounds pathetic now of course. And I’m almost ashamed to admit it now. But that was the extent cigarettes ruled my life.

Plus I had chronic bronchitis, frequent coughs and colds in winter and always too much phlegm. Basically my health was a mess. And it was all due to my smoking.
