BACKGROUND HISTORY
My name is Gunnar Bubo. 30 Years ago I was overweight too. I had
stopped smoking and in a few years put on 20-25 pounds. I felt very
unhappy about it. Every time I looked in the mirror I saw that face
with the double chin. I could not wear my clothes. My fitness was
bad. Every new day was a struggle. And nothing seemed to help. I just
became heavier. If I succeeded in losing a few pounds, I gained
them back very quickly. Are you familiar with the picture?
And I was always hungry. I tried calorie-counting,
carbohydrate-dieting and most of the other quickies recommended in
magazines. But nothing helped. I thought I was a hopeless case.
But one day I acquired a book about the mystery of metabolism. It
is a very complicated digestive process, that converts our food into
energy. Some foods seem to easy run trough the body, and others need
to be processed, melted, kneaded, changed, grinned and divided, before
the body is ready with it. That is difficult work for the body and
it craves a lot of energy. Energy that is taken from the body's fat
reserve, resulting in weight loss.
This seemed very interesting. I started to experiment on myself.
First I found out which food was hard to digest. I made a long list
and went to the grocery store and then started to experiment with my
eating.
IT WORKED!
Something very extraordinary happened. I started to lose weight
rapidly! The theory worked in practice! AND IT WORKED, EVEN IF I
DID EAT AS MUCH OR EVEN MORE THAN BEFORE!
_A NEW SCIENTIFIC THEORY! _
You will gain or lose weight,
depending on what type of food you eat.
The amount is of no significance!
_OR IF YOU COUNT CALORIES: _
If you shall gain or lose weight,
does not depend on the amount of calories you eat.
The importance is, what type of calories!
WHAT IS A CALORIE?
A Calorie is a heat unit. The amount of heat required to raise the
temperature of one gram of water one degree centigrade.
OUR NEED OF ENERGY
A normal grown male person needs about 3.000 calories per day. A
female person about 2.200 calories. According to the available facts,
you will lose weight if you give the body fewer calories than it
needs.
Referring to the diet literature you need to give the body not
more than about 1.200 calories per day, in order to lose weight.
This is sometimes a fact, but not always. Look at this comparison:
2 portions of pasta with sausages = 1,200 calories or
12 bagels with spreads = 1,200 calories.
According to the diet expertise, you should lose weight.
In reality, you gain weight! Why? Because the calories are too
easy, not at all difficult, for the body to digest. The reason is, you
give the body more energy than it needs. The extra calories are stored
in the body's fat deposits.
_MINUS OR PLUS CALORIES _
We have now established the following fact:
Whether we gain or lose weight
depends on what type of calories we eat.
Food easy for the body to digest gives
excess energy = plus calories.
Food difficult for the body to digest
gives deficit = minus calories.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE EAT?
The digestion of the food starts primarily in your mouth. When you
start to chew, your teeth grind the food into smaller particles and
moisten it at the same time wi1h saliva. In the saliva there are
enzymes that are necessary for the proper digestion. When we swallow,
food is transferred into the stomach, where the real work of digestion
starts. All the muscles in the stomach knead and blend the food with
acidity, enzymes and a series of other juices of the stomach. A lot of
energy is used. After two to four hours the food exits the stomach and
enters into the duodenum. This is the first part of the bowels. This
first part is between 14 to 20 feet long! Here the food is blended
with quite a few enzymes and other liquids. Bile, for instance, which
is produced by the liver.
At this time both chemical, and mechanical work is done. This
process is called peristalsis. Peristalsis is a series of slow, but
powerful, successive waves of involuntary contraction passing along
the walls of the intestine. This hollow muscular structure kneads and
forces the contents onward. Here much energy is expended.
In this part of the intestine, most of the nourishment is absorbed.
Then it passes the blind gut. Next halt is the large intestine. It is
about 10 feet long and here most of the fluid is taken care of and
finally the remains leave the body in form of excrements. The whole
channel of digestion is over 30 feet long!
It is fascinating to study this complicated machinery that exists
within our body, and which is at work 24 hours per day, even if we
sleep or are awake.
It takes at least 24 hours for a portion of hard digested food to
pass through this system.
AND ALL THE TIME IT CONSUMES LARGE AMOUNTS OF ENERGY!
The liver itself uses about 25% of the total energy consumption!
But the biggest consumer of energy is of course the powerful muscular
contractions in the intestine, the Peristalsis. One portion of food is
affected by 800 to 1000 kneads on its way through the system!
Enough of digestive theory for a moment! But I thought the above
descriptions were necessary for your information, in order to
understand the theory, behind the plus
