ate my parents out of house and home. I bought a TON of supplements,
many of which were poured down the drain because they sucked. Those
that were not discarded were most likely pissed out or, um, moved out,
forcibly! I worked out hard, too, often putting in hours at a time in
the home gym. I remember, on weekends, I would work chest in the
morning, eat, work on the lats, then have lunch. After lunch, I would
work on the arms.
To make a long story short, I didn't gain much in the way of muscle
or even weight. (Seriously, I could not even get fat if I tried. It
was a joke to see how many calories I could consume in a day.) I was
stuck at about 90 pounds for many of my teenage years.
I consulted the "muscle magazines" like Muscle Builder (now Muscle
and Fitness), Flex, IronMan, and Muscular Development. I bought every
new book to come out about bodybuilding. I remember not being able to
wait for Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. It tore me up that I
couldn't know everything Arnold knew. I bet you do this, too: You read
the latest "Arm Blasting Work Out of XXX" and immediately go try it.
And the food supplements! The advertisements are SO enticing! You just
have to try the latest "muscle-building, fat-burning (even though you
have less fat than a homeless man), arm-pumping, muscle-splitting"
potion in a bottle or can that you signed up for the GNC Gold card and
cannot wait until Tuesday!
I tried weight gain powders, the Gallon of Milk a Day plan, high
carbs, even higher protein. Super HEAVY weights (for me, the "skinny
dude"). High sets, reps, and weights. Double-split routines. Tri-sets
and Giant sets. I blasted my muscles from every angle, with every rep,
weight, and set combination possible. Don't get me wrong. I made
_some_ progress. But 5 pounds a year was not enough!
Now, I had read that professional bodybuilders would DIE to gain 5
pounds of solid muscle in a year. But I could not wait 20 years to get
to 200! As a teenager, I had a real problem. I was skinny, I was doing
EVERYTHING the pros recommended, and I was not making very much
progress!
It was awful!
BEING A HARDGAINER TOTALLY SUCKS. THERE WERE MANY TIMES I THOUGHT OF
JUST QUITTING. TAKE UP CREW, OR GOLF, OR KNITTING.
But I persevered. I found some really good reference material by
relativley quiet and obscure bodybuilding trainers. They were on to
something. AND SO WAS I!!!
I was bound to make progress. (I never "doubted" myself, but I sure
did get discouraged once in a while. Why did my friends grow and I
didn't? It bugged me, to be honest.)
It is a sad but true fact that hardgainers fail to build muscle and
gain weight because they are not doing _something_ right, whether it
be their training, diet, supplementation plan, or something else. And
most of us never "figure it out." Heck, it took me 20 years to figure
it out!!! That's a L-O-N-G time, man!

PROBLEM #1 - Professional bodybuilders are literally different
animals than you and me. Dexter Jackson and I could eat the EXACT SAME
THING and he would gain a pound of solid muscle and I'd piss or crap
it all away. I'm not kidding.
Think about it... Jackson, Coleman, Yates, Haney...they all are
extremely gifted athletes. It would be like me trying to do the same
workout as Jerry Rice or Barry Bonds (there's the steroid talk
again!)...or performing the same drills as Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck.
PROBLEM #2 - The articles written in bodybuilding magazines really
aren't written by the bodybuilders themselves. They get PAID for
lending their names to the magazines; the magazines get sold because
people want to know how Jay Cutler got those massive arms! It's safe
to say that some of the articles about training and nutrition don't
even resemble a given "author's" routine! It's a dispicable practice,
but it's as widespread as a Franco Columbu lat spread!
NEEDLESS TO SAY, THERE IS A LOT OF CRAP OUT THERE REGARDING JUST HOW
TO BUILD MUSCLE. AND IT GETS REALLY RIDICULOUS WHEN A HARDGAINER TRIES
SOME OF IT! YOU WILL MOST LIKELY _LOSE MUSCLE_ AND MAYBE EVEN INJURE
YOURSELF TRYING TO MIMIC THE ROUTINES IN THE MAGAZINES. BUT YOU KNOW
WHAT? THERE IS AN EASIER WAY! IT'S HALF COMMON SENSE, HALF "DUH!"
Seriously, if I can gain weight and build the body I wanted, so can
you! You just have to be shown how. And you know what? You will spend
less time in the gym, more time with your friends and family (or
whoever and however you want), you will spend less on supplements, and
zero on magazines (you don't need them -- in fact, they are
counter-productive).
In fact, you will feel like you have FINALLY gained control.
