20 years now, and I am also an avid grappler trained in

It was a major uphill battle __ - really hard and often _very
_disappointing! My body didn't change that much during the first two
years of training. And I put in a really sterling effort! I'll admit
that steroids became very tempting during those frustrating early

Looking back, training with a number of guys that STILL LOOKED LIKE
BEGINNERS AFTER _MONTHS_ ON THE 'JUICE' made made me realize that

information by the bodybuilding mags. Why else would I not be gaining

Thank goodness that I was always one to go against the grain,
because after a while I was fortunate to realize that...

BLIND FAITH DOESN'T BUILD MUSCLE!

Unfortunately 99% of us start out by taking a huge leap of faith,
and then we just stick with it hoping that things work out eventually.
Believe me, following those dime-a-dozen CRAP routines in the muscle
mags - supposedly written by the featured bodybuilder - is the surest
route to fail in your quest to build serious muscle mass.

Those damn articles are ghost-written anyway. And judging by the
crap advice in those articles, which by the way is just the same 20
year old rehashed trash, it's very likely that the ghostwriter never
lifted a weight in his/her life!

NO WONDER ONLY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE GET ANY RESULTS FROM THOSE MUSCLE
MAG ROUTINES

And those that do are the muscle-building genetic elite anyway.

You know, those lucky bastards that grow on just about any weight
training program - regardless of how crap it is. That, by the way is
_exactly_ why you should not follow a pro bodybuilder's routine. Even
if you do manage to get your hands on their _real_ routine. They just
have a genetic makeup that is far superior for building muscle than
the average human being's.

You and I need to be much smarter. We need a muscle mass building
formula that is built on an entirely different foundation than the
routines we see in the mags, on the Internet, and even in books and
ebooks.

MY QUEST FOR THE TRUTH BEGINS...

Once I realized that the routines in the muscle mags are just
rehashed garbage, I started searching for methods that actually worked
in _practice_, rather than just looking good on paper. That's where my
training as a scientist started benefiting my bodybuilding. Knowing a
lot of biology (and being able to learn more very easily) allowed me
to 'dissect' various muscle building methods in order to separate the
gold nuggets from the dirt. Beyond that, I started paying attention to
what the older, larger _natural_ lifters were doing in the gym and
analyzing their methods too.

You see, as long as you still have your dream of a superstar physique,
they have you right where they want you. They want you to struggle to

It's no coincidence that every major muscle magazine is owned by a
major supplement manufacturer or vice versa. An entire industry has
been built on tricking people into failing!

So do yourself a favor and forget about 'miracle supplements'...

HERE'S ALL THE SUPPLEMENT ADVICE YOU'LL EVER NEED...

There are some great supplements out there. But they're just that -
supplements. The best ones also happen to be much cheaper than the
latest hyped-up 'magic potions'. Of course, even _good_ supplements
start out ridiculously expensive until competition forces prices down.


Trust me, you don't need fancy supplements - _just make a mental
note of these _for future reference:

Protein supplement. Most people find it difficult to eat enough from
solid protein. Supplements are great in that regard. Whey, egg, milk
or isolated soy protein supplements are all fine (and cost effective).
Try to get 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight every day - use
the supplements to fill the shortfall (if any) from your solid meals.
Don't go overboard! EXCESS PROTEIN JUST ENDS UP AS _EXPENSIVE URINE_!

Creatine is really cheap now that the hype has died down. Still, it
does work. Get a cheap name-brand if you're not one of the small group
of people that gets stomach upset from it. Otherwise, get one of the
micronized versions, which is only slightly more expensive.

Fish oil. Has definite muscle building and a loooong list of health
benefits.

*

A cheap multivitamin. This is just nutritional insurance. If you're
trying to bulk up and you're eating good foods, then you're probably
getting enough vitamins anyway.

Trust me, that's all you need and is exactly what I'm taking right
now (although I only occasionally supplement protein).

And I do NOT megadose - EVER. I don't intend giving supplement
companies any more money than I need to! Screw the damn supplement
bandwagon! I hope its wheels come off someday soon!

Hopefully that takes care of the mysticism surrounding bodybuilding
supplements, but...

IS BULKING A GOOD STRATEGY TO BUILD MUSCLE MASS?

Yes!

As far as I'm concerned, bulking up is the _best _way to pack on
muscle mass as fast as possible. Especially if you're naturally
skinny. The body is much more willing to pack on new muscle tissue
when it is in a state of nutritional excess. Sure, you can
_definitely_ build muscle and lose fat at the same time, but then your
expectations must be realistic - you simply won't build muscle at a
maximum rate.

Now if your goal is to pack on a LOT of muscle fast, then you should
not afraid of packing on a bit of fat. Of course, you have to keep it
in check and 'pause' occasionally to bring the fat down to reasonable
levels, but bulking is a very good strategy if you do it right.

However, bulking to add muscular bodyweight is not _only_ about
consuming a lot of calories...

YOU CAN'T EAT LIKE A SUMO WRESTLER AND EXPECT TO LOOK LIKE A
BODYBUILDER

SURE, IF YOU ARE SKINNY WITH A FAST METABOLISM, THEN YOU WILL NEED
TO EAT A LOT.

But if you don't want to end up skinny-fat (same amount of muscle
with more fat) then you need to give your body a reason to use that
food for building new muscle mass rather than just storing it as fat.
Also, if you're one of those people who just seems to burn through
everything they eat, then you need the right training system that will
make your body think twice about wasting nutrients (and supplements)
instead of building muscle.

Well, the problem is that most bodybuilding and bulking programs and
systems are built on a really crap foundation. The reality is that

One has to be very careful not to just believe all of the free
information on the Internet. Many of the self-proclaimed experts are
nothing but armchair warriors that are trying to 'get a life' by
posing as authority figures. And if you've ever seen photos of the
scientist-types that can cite all the scientific literature, then
you've probably wondered whether they've ever even touched a weight. I
say if they can't walk the walk, then they shouldn't talk the friggin
talk!

Harsh, I realize, but you know the saying about not trusting a thin
chef...

Sure, there are a few courses that work well and I have even
recommended them to people that have asked me to 'choose one'. But the
bottom line is that while they've made significant modifications,
their very core is still based on the bullshit dogma perpetuated by
Joe Weider and others that later built onto his 'laws of muscle
building'. 'Free' information can cost you dearly in the long run,
especially if it forces you to conform with the herd mentality.

Which brings me to something the herd is really into right now...

WEIGHTLIFTING, POWERLIFTING ">side effect!

Allow me to clarify before strongman athletes, powerlifters and
weightlifters think that I'm disrespecting them (I'm not). It is true
that the top guys in those sports carry huge amounts of muscle on
their frames. But it is also true that packing on muscle mass is not
their primary goal.

The reality is that:

* it just takes longer to build muscle when your primary goal is
strength
* is much harder work (those guys are all as tough as nails!)
* the top guys are on the 'gear' (roids) and their muscle mass
would be a lot less impressive if they were clean - this will ruffle
some feathers, but if golfers and soccer players are known to use
steroids...

Even Dave Tate, the world famous powerlifter and trainer (who
carries an enormous amount of muscle on his frame) has said the very
same thing - that if he were starting out and wanted to focus on
building muscle, then he would not go the strength route.

Sure, if you're an athlete that needs to be big and strong, then
you'll do best by mixing things up a bit - strength training +
targeted muscle building (hypertrophy). But if your main aim is to
bulk up and build muscle mass as fast as possible, then you must train
specifically for that goal.

Same goes for 'old school' training

Make no mistake, I love it for the sports carryover effect - but
we're talking about growing muscle as fast as possible here! _And as
far as building muscle mass goes, 'old school training' belongs in the
_past.
