You can't afford to be uninformed or misinformed. Whether you live or travel alone or have children, adults or elderly adults in your household, you need to know first aid techniques so you can respond effectively in any situation.

You Can Make a Big Difference in an Emergency - If You Know Basic First Aid Techniques and Have the Right Supplies On Hand.

FACT: Unintentional injuries continue to be the fifth leading cause of death, exceeded only by heart disease, cancer, stroke, and pulmonary diseases....

Are you one of those people who thinks:

"If I encounter an emergency, all I have to do is call 9-1-1 and they'll send help."

But do you realize that you are depending on someone else? While emergency responders often arrive within minutes, you can't guarantee that they will not be delayed or that you'll be in a location that's easy to reach!

At the very least, basic first aid techniques can make an injured person more comfortable until help arrives. In some cases the right thing to do for an injured person may be nothing - such as not moving him or her - and waiting for emergency responders. But you need to recognize when to do what. This indispensable first aid handbook is a complete resource everyone should have.

What if the following happens to your loved one:

During a sleep over one child begins to choke... A child riding a bicycle down a hill hits a tree and sustains a severe laceration on her head... A babysitter recognizes that a child who stopped breathing has an obstruction in her airway... A maintenance man unplugging wires from an electrical box kneels down in wet grass and is shocked with 2,000 volts of electricity, which stops his heart and breathing...

Will you be prepared?

During a sleep over one child begins to choke... another relieves him by administering the Heimlich Maneuver. A child riding a bicycle down a hill hits a tree and sustains a severe laceration on her head... onlookers rush over and prevent her from going into shock. A babysitter recognizes that a child who stopped breathing has an obstruction in her airway... after dislodging the object with abdominal thrusts, she begins CPR. A maintenance man unplugging wires from an electrical box kneels down in wet grass and is shocked with 2,000 volts of electricity, which stops his heart and breathing... fellow workers call for help while others perform CPR until the medics arrive seven minutes later.
In most of these cases, emergency responders comment that if it hadn't been for the skills of the person who rushed in to help, the injury would have been much worse. These are stories of people who were prepared and who turned out to be critical links in the chain of survival.

Here's my own incredible story...

Dear Friend,

I'd been an avid hiker for years - a member of AMC, one of the largest environmental organizations in the county - but I never bothered to learn the basic first aid information that I'm now convinced everyone should know, even my 10-year old son.

It took a harrowing accident in the woods to open my eyes to how important it is to know just the first aid basics. And when I did come to this realization, I rushed to make sure everyone in my household also was knowledgeable about how to administer basic first aid - so they could be prepared whether they were at home, on the road or in a foreign country.

The hike that taught me a lesson took place in upstate New York, around New Paltz. It was sponsored by the AMC, so there was an official hike leader and a "sweep" to make sure everyone in the back was accounted for.

It was a beautiful fall day, so a big group showed up for the hike - maybe 30 of us. This particular hike leader, Stan, is known for encouraging hikers to bring food for sharing with the group - cheese, crackers, dried fruit, cookies - the more exotic the better.

We'd hiked about four miles, at which point we found a lovely spot with a view to stop and have lunch. We were passing our goodies around when we heard a shriek from someone in the group. Ironically, it was Stan, the hike leader. Apparently, he was in the process of opening a can of grape leaves and cut himself, seriously.

Thank goodness, at least one person knew exactly what to do. Joe jumped right in and began issuing orders to us to give him this and do that, to call for help, to dig into our backpacks for various first aid supplies. He asked most of us to step aside, but I heard from the eyewitnesses that it was a very deep slash near a main artery.

By the time the Parks Department emergency responders arrived, which seemed like at least a half an hour, maybe more, Stan was stable and ready to be transported to the hospital. Since I'd volunteered to drive Stan's car, a friend and I followed the ambulance to the hospital, waited a few hours for Stan to be released, and drove him home.

Stan was lucky, and he knew it. As a hike leader, he was well versed in first aid techniques - and on the way home he told us how competently Joe had handled the situation. The incident drove home the point of how important it is to know basic first aid. What happened to Stan could happen to me or someone else in my own kitchen, or anyone's. I registered for the AMC's first aid course that week.

I wanted to share this story so you'd be encouraged to take the initiative to learn as much as you can about first aid. Reading this book - and sharing the information with everyone in your household - is one of the best things you'll ever do for your own safety and the safety of others.

Sincerely,
Janet B.

You've heard lots of stories of how quickly EMS arrived... Unfortunately, there are also times when EMS just doesn't get there in time

With this book, you can act right away - you won't be dependent on others!

It's always a part of the story: how quickly the EMS team arrived - or how long it took. There are even some unbelievable stories, like the fact that the fire department was only a half-mile away from the emergency, but for some reason it still took over 15 minutes for them to arrive.

In an emergency, 15 minutes can be an eternity. This is why you need to know what to do, how to react! You'd be amazed that what may seem like an inconsequential fix turns out to be a crucial stop-gap measure for saving someone from permanent impairment or even death.

This book breaks it all down and gives you step-by-step instructions about what to do in a range of situations - from a minor cut to a heart that stopped beating!

Many people do not realize that sometimes the best course of action is to stay calm, make the injured person as comfortable as possible without exacerbating the problem, and do your best to provide comfort and emotional support until help arrives. But the key lies in knowing what to do and what not to do! This comprehensive book addresses everything you need to know.

Knowledge you need at home, at work, during your leisure activities and when you travel...

The book tells you everything you need to know about handling medical problems that can occur in the home, on your way to work, at work, at the supermarket, during recreational activities and when you travel. You'll notice that we've mentioned practically every minute of every day. That's why the information in this book is so important for everyone to know, even children. Because things happen, and they can happen at any time, which is why you need to be prepared.

If you're an avid traveler, it's especially important that you learn basic first aid and travel with a complete first aid kit. If you're someone who likes to visit exotic, remote places, chances are you are well versed in first aid techniques. If you're not well informed, do not take another trip without buying this book and reading it cover to cover - in fact, be sure to make room for it in your pack.

But even if you're a less adventurous type, do not leave home without the knowledge that's contained in this book. You do not want to have to depend on emergency responders in a foreign country. Be prepared to address any situation so you or an injured person can be in the best shape possible when the medics arrive.

If you don't know basic first aid, you need to make it a priority on your to-do list.

Not everyone was a Boy Scout or Girl Scout, so you may not have had the benefit of first aid training when you were young. But even if you were taught basic first aid some time during your life, you need to take another look and see what has changed - what is new and which techniques are no longer used - and this book covers it all. In fact, getting up to speed should be #1 on your to-do list because a mishap could happen at any time.

Minutes count when someone is injured. Be ready to help with this book

When it comes to first aid, you can't afford to be uninformed or misinformed. If you answered "No" to any of the questions in our quiz, you need to buy this book and read it today. You'll be amazed to learn how simple many first aid techniques are - if you only invest the time to find out. Basic first aid is not just for professionals, it's for everyone, even children.

As we noted above, many of the American Red Cross heroes have been children. Basic first aid is all about helping each other - but no one should undertake to help unless she/he knows what to do and what not to do.
