Fellow Athlete, These next few paragraphs could quite possibly
change your athletic career forever (Yes, It's that important). So,
Shut the T.V. off, unplug your phone, kick your shoes into the closet,
get comfortable........... and read every single word.
I couldn't even touch the rim until I discovered this!
Who Am I and Why Should You Listen To Me ?
Okay, I am not totally comfortable "tooting my own horn and talking
about myself................but you need to know......
Who the heck am I, and why should you listen to me?
I am a Basketball Junkie.............a Gym Rat...........an Awesome
Shooter..............Former Coach..... ...........and an Excellent
Player........ I played my High School Basketball in Wisconsin and my
College Basketball at Concordia College. I am a 6'2" shooting guard
who has played with and against some of the best players in the world.
I have been around the game for the last thirty years and I know what
works.
I did not make it to the NBA......................but I have played
in pick-up games with many pro players including Terry Porter, Glen
"Doc" Rivers, Johnny Mac, and Dean Garrett to name a few. And believe
me............I held my own.
I have played in more pick-up games, City League games, and 3-on-3
tournaments then I can remember. I have attended numerous basketball
camps and have been coached by some great coaches including Coach
Wayne Rasmueson.
My most memorable achievements on the basketball court include
hitting 67 jump-shots in a row from the top of the key...............
scoring 50 points on 5 different ocassions in city league
games...........Playing in the finals of the 3-on-3 tournament
sponsored by the NBA at the 1995 All-Star Game held in Phoenix
Arizona...............Hitting 11 straight hoops in a 5-on-5 pick-up
game............and schooling taller, stronger, and quicker players
all over the country.
I Am Not A Natural Athlete
I am not a natural athlete. In fact....... I sat on the bench in 8th
grade and only got in during "garbage time"..... ........In high
school I only made the freshman "B team"....... I understand what
being slow and not being able to jump can do for your basketball
self-image..........it sucks!...........
However, there is hope..........Between my freshman and sophomore
year in high school I started strengthening my legs with
plyometrics......... and I went from the Freshman B Team to a starter
on the Junior Varsity my sophomore year........ to a starter on the
Varsity Team both my junior and senior years.............to a starter
in college..........jumping higher pays big time!!
Let me also mention that I am a USPTA Tennis Pro.......... coaching
players for the last 15 years........... Including 7 years at the
world famous Arizona Biltmore Resort.......... I love helping people
get better. It will give me great pleasure to help you dunk a
basketball!
What Is The Problem?
The problem is leg strength and jumping ability.............the
problem is not being able to jump high enough to dunk..........the
problem is not jumping high enough to grab rebounds in
traffic.........the problem is not jumping high enough to get your
jump-shot off..............the problem is not jumping high enough to
play defense and block shots.........let me repeat....... the problem
is not jumping high enough! I had the same problem....... I couldn't
jump high enough.........Gravity was my master........I wasn't a very
good athlete and it was making my life difficult!
Not jumping high enough was creating all kinds of obstacles for
me............first of all........ I couldn't even get in the
game........I felt bad when my mom would take off from work to come
see me play and I couldn't even get off the bench..........I felt bad
listening to all my teammates, who were playing , talk about the games
on the long bus rides home.......I felt bad letting my coaches
down...............and I hate to admit this ..........I didn't feel
confident around girls either.
Not jumping high enough is going to cause you a lot of
problems.........You are not going to get as much playing
time.........You are not going to be able to dunk..........You are not
going to be able to get your jump-shot off when you want to........You
are not going to grab rebounds in traffic...........You are not going
to block as many shots........ you are not going to feel as confident
as you should...........and you are not going to have as much fun
playing basketball!!
I KNEW THERE HAD TO BE A WAY TO JUMP HIGHER!
I just couldn't stop dreaming of jumping higher and getting some
playing time...........I knew their must be a way to increase your
vertical at least 6-10 inches...................So, I went to the
Library and read every basketball book I could find.
Every one of my lunch-hours and study-halls was spent in the
Greendale Middle School Library reading basketball
books......................Till this day the basketball exploits of
Julius Erving (Dr. J), Wilt Chamberlain, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley,
and Spencer Haywood are fresh in my mind.
The stories were awesome! Wilt Chamberlain challenging Jim Brown to
a foot- race and scoring 100 points in a single game .................
Walt Frazier's cool attitude and unbelievable wardrobe............
Bill Bradley setting scoring records in college and becoming a Rhodes
Scholar..............A young Spencer Haywood playing in the
Olympics...........And Julius Erving dunking on everybody in the old
ABA..........Fantastic!
No specific answers for jumping higher however!.............. I
wanted the specific secrets the pros used to jump higher and dunk!
Finally.........I Got A Break!
Finally I got a break........................My Mom signed me up for
a two-week basketball camp conducted by "Coach
Rappis"................Coach Rappis was a great coach who loved to
stress the fundamentals.........The 2 things I remember most about the
basketball camp however were...............(1.) the fact that his son
played at Arizona State and was being drafted into the NBA
and............(2.) the secrets he gave me for jumping higher.
Finally..............someone who knew the secrets for jumping
higher..........this was a huge life lesson ..........and one I
practice in every area of my life................find a good
mentor.......learn from people who can already do what you want to
do.............Coach Rappis was the first of many mentors who taught
me the secrets for jumping higher...........and I want to pass those
secrets on to you.
